Everyone loves penguins. The success of local author, Hazel Prior‘s second novel Away with the Penguins is proof of that! Inspired by the adventurous spirit of elderly people, her concerns for the environment and, of course, penguins, it hit the number one bestseller spot in both audiobook and ebook, and was a Richard and Judy Book Club selection as well as a BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick.
Hazel has lived all over the place: The Welsh borders, Dorset, Devon, Scotland, Italy (Verona) and Bath. Currently she lives on Exmoor with her husband and a huge ginger cat.
At university (St Andrews) she studied English and Medieval history, although she claims she has forgotten nearly all of the Medieval history. After uni she changed direction and studied music at Dartington College of Arts. Then she realised it would take more than a year to learn the whole of ‘music’, so she went to Italy and taught English to Italians…
Alongside her writing, Hazel is an enthusiastic and experienced harp-player, a passion reflected in her debut novel Ellie and the Harpmaker. She has promised to bring her harp to this session making it a wonderful opportunity to hear about life, love, grief, success, and penguins – with a lyrical accompaniment.
